Mmatema Crowned 2026 Gospel Artist of the Year At Basadi In Music Awards. Mmatema has added another major accolade to her growing list of achievements after being crowned the 2026 Gospel Artist of the Year at the fifth annual Basadi In Music Awards.
The Limpopo-born gospel powerhouse received the honour during the main awards ceremony at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, on Saturday, 8 August 2026. Her victory celebrates a career built on powerful vocals, authentic storytelling and music deeply rooted in faith.
Mmatema’s recognition comes on the back of her acclaimed live album Heart of Gratitude and the moving song “Oa Ntwanela”, two releases that have further cemented her place among South Africa’s leading gospel voices.
Her journey to the top of the gospel scene began on a very different stage.
In 2015, Mmatema Moremi captured the attention of South Africa as the runner-up of Idols South Africa Season 11. Her unforgettable performance of Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper” earned her widespread praise and the nickname “the Skyscraper”, with many viewers believing she deserved the season’s top prize.
Instead of allowing the competition to define her career, Mmatema followed a different path. She embraced gospel music and began building a ministry and musical identity centred on worship, testimony and an unwavering commitment to her faith.
She eventually established Mmatema Moremi Media Productions and went on to release projects such as Love. Praise. Worship. while collaborating with the renowned Spirit of Praise. Her music has consistently combined powerful vocals with messages designed to encourage listeners through both triumph and adversity.
That message of gratitude became especially prominent with the release of her 2025 live album Heart of Gratitude, recorded at the Pretoria State Theatre.
The project represented a deeply personal chapter for the singer. Mmatema described the album as a musical gratitude journal, documenting her appreciation for the different seasons of her life, including marriage, motherhood, ministry and the quieter moments of trusting God.
Songs including “He Still Can”, “Oa Ntwanela” and “O Lokile” connected with audiences through their themes of faith, hope and perseverance.
Her latest BIMA recognition follows an impressive run of achievements. In 2025, Mmatema co-hosted the 18th Crown Gospel Music Awards alongside Millicent Mashile, while also taking to the stage as a performer. She left the ceremony with the Best Female Artist award.
Her creative journey also expanded into acting that year when she took on the role of Basetsana in the Mzansi Magic drama Genesis. Her appearance on the series also provided an opportunity for her music to reach an even wider audience.
Away from the spotlight, Mmatema has often spoken about the importance of balancing her family, ministry and creative career while remaining sensitive to what she believes God is calling her to do. Married to Tshepo “Mr G” Gavu and a mother, she has also been candid about seasons of stepping back, growing and waiting for the right time to move forward.
Her latest honour came during an awards weekend dedicated to celebrating women making an impact across South Africa’s music industry.
Founded by Hloni Modise Matau and presented in association with SAMPRA, the Basadi In Music Awards were held over two nights under the theme “Rewind”. Mmatema faced strong competition in the Gospel Artist of the Year category, which also featured Ada Ehi, Futhi Mhlongo, HLE and Musa Yende.
Ultimately, it was Mmatema who emerged victorious, adding another defining moment to a career that has steadily evolved from television talent-show finalist to respected gospel artist and minister.
Her journey from Zebediela to some of South Africa’s biggest stages is a story shaped by persistence, faith and purpose. With Heart of Gratitude continuing to speak to audiences and “Oa Ntwanela” reinforcing her musical message, the award serves as another affirmation of the impact she is making.
