Matthew West Releases 14th Studio Album ‘Jesus Is King’ Matthew West has released his 14th studio album, Jesus Is King, a 12-track project centered on faith, surrender, redemption and the authority of Jesus.
The album is built around a simple statement that West leaves intentionally unfinished: “Jesus is _____.” Across the project, the five-time Grammy nominee explores different ways of completing that declaration, drawing on themes including goodness, mercy, strength, grace and redemption.
“I’ve been a Christian for a long time,” West told The Christian Post this week. “I think I’m looking at the world around me, and I’m seeing a society that gets obsessed with self-empowerment and control. As a follower of Christ, what I’ve discovered is when I surrender my life to a higher authority, I find freedom, not imprisonment.”
The album begins and ends with its title track, “Jesus Is King,” framing the project around a declaration of Christ’s authority. In between, West explores different aspects of faith through songs drawn from both personal experiences and biblical themes.
“Good,” which has become West’s 39th No. 1 as an artist and songwriter, focuses on grace and the goodness of God. “Back to Jesus” speaks to the experience of returning to faith after drifting away, while “Younger Me” looks back at West’s younger years, including teenage faith, rejection in Nashville and the journey that eventually shaped his life and career.
Other tracks include “Here and Heaven,” which reflects on the tension between present life and the hope of eternity, and “Shame Is Not My Story,” which draws from the message of 2 Corinthians 5:17 and the transformation found in becoming a new creation in Christ.
Musically, Jesus Is King expands on Matthew West’s recent sound by combining contemporary production with acoustic elements. The project moves between darker pop-inspired textures and larger, anthemic choruses, giving the veteran songwriter room to explore a broader sonic direction.
The album follows West’s 2024 release Don’t Stop Praying, continuing a career that has often blended personal experiences with faith-centered songwriting.
When Jesus Is King was first announced, West said the project was personal to him and became a reminder of where his faith is anchored.
“I think I needed to make this record as much as I needed anyone else to hear it,” West said. “Life has a way of making a lot of things feel bigger than they really are, our fears, our failures, the noise of the world around us. These songs became a reminder to my own heart that none of those things get the final word. Only Jesus does.”
West is also taking the new music to audiences across the United States through his 17-stop Jesus Is King Tour. The tour began September 10 in Austin and continues through early October.
With Jesus Is King, West places his faith at the center of his latest musical chapter, using 12 songs to explore what it means to surrender control and keep Jesus at the center.
