In Conversation: Xolani Mfusi Unpacks The Meaning Behind His Upcoming EP ‘Zambule.’ South African up-and-coming gospel artist Xolani Mfusi is turning a deeply personal season of seeking God into music with his upcoming EP, Zambule. The project reflects a period in which faith, struggle and the pursuit of God’s presence became central to his creative journey.
Speaking exclusively to Worship Chronicle, Mfusi opened up about the meaning behind Zambule, the experiences that shaped the project and the message he hopes listeners will take from the music.
Born in Leslie and raised in the Western Highveld, Xolani Mfusi said his upbringing played an important role in shaping his faith and responding to his calling as a gospel artist.
“My community is a very spiritual and deeply rooted in God community,” he said. “That alone made it easy when the call came.”
That spiritual foundation continues to influence his music, which draws from experiences of resilience, hope, healing and a deeper pursuit of God.
The title Zambule carries a personal meaning for Mfusi. “Zambule kithi,” which means “reveal yourself to us,” became a reflection of a season when he found himself looking to God for answers.
“Zambule kithi, meaning ‘reveal yourself to us,’ is a reflection of a point in time where nothing made sense besides God’s face,” he said.
Mfusi said the project emerged from experiences he went through earlier this year, although he does not view its timing as something he personally decided.
“I wouldn’t call it my timing. I believe God has appointed the time for this project,” he said.
The EP also reflects moments when Mfusi felt he was running out of strength. He said the inspiration for the project came during a period when he needed to keep moving forward by seeking God.
“I’ve been through so much,” he said. “And when the song dropped in my spirit, it was directly speaking to me about giving up. The only way to push was to see God, hence Zambule kithi.”
For Mfusi, the project represents more than a collection of gospel songs. He sees himself as both a minister and a storyteller, using music to communicate experiences of faith and encounters with God.
“I believe I’m not only just a minister but a storyteller through song,” he added. “People should expect reassurance of Grace and a deeper understanding of the term ‘meeting place’, where we meet God and become one with Him.”
He believes the journey behind Zambule has already become part of its testimony. According to Mfusi, his prayer for God to reveal Himself was reflected in the making of the project.
“When I said ‘ZAMBULE KITHI,’ God did just that on this project. He really made sure that the project came alive. So it’s more than a song; it’s also a testimony of faith,” Xolani said.
The title track holds a particularly significant place in the project for Mfusi, who describes it as the song that speaks most directly to his current season.
“Zambule kithi is literally the song I’m looking forward to, as it is literally a song that speaks to me personally this season.”
While South Africa has no shortage of gospel voices, Mfusi said his contribution is rooted in the personal nature of his songwriting and the relationship behind the music.
He describes his sound as a “fresh new sound”, explaining that his music is composed and written from a deeply personal place shared between himself and God.
Beyond the EP’s release, Mfusi is already looking ahead to what the project could become in a live setting. He revealed that plans are being considered for a launch that would give listeners an opportunity to experience the music beyond its digital release.
“A lot,” he said when asked what listeners can expect next. “We are praying for a launch after the release so that people can get the live feel of the song.”
At the heart of Zambule is Mfusi’s desire to see listeners draw closer to God. Rather than simply presenting his own story, he hopes the project encourages others to deepen their understanding of who God is and strengthen their relationship with Him.
“I pray that people get a better understanding of who God is and have a deep relationship with God. My prayer is that the project gives God glory.”
Through Zambule, Mfusi is documenting a season of faith, struggle and seeking while inviting listeners into the same place that inspired the project: a place of meeting with God.
