South African gospel singer-songwriter Mmatema has opened up about the inspiration behind her album Heart of Gratitude, revealing that the project was born from a life-changing shift in perspective that transformed her outlook on faith, blessings, and thanksgiving.
In a heartfelt message to fans, Mmatema shared that the album emerged from a season of deep reflection. Despite feeling that she had done everything she could spiritually—reading books, giving generously, and praying extensively—she realised something was still missing.
“The Heart of Gratitude album was birthed from exactly that; a heart filled with thanks!” she wrote. “I had read enough books, given so much, believed I’ve prayed enough, but none of it was enough, until I got a revelation that there was so much to be grateful for.”
According to the singer, the turning point came when she stopped focusing on what she felt was lacking and instead reflected on God’s faithfulness and unchanging nature.
“I just had to shift the perspective,” she explained. “I had to look the other way, at what He’d done (He doesn’t change) and who He is! Boy or bouy, everything just started pouring.”

Mmatema also encouraged supporters to continue streaming Heart of Gratitude and spending time reflecting on the biblical passage found in First Epistle to the Thessalonians 5:16-18, which calls believers to rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances.
