Khaya Mthethwa Announces Live Worship EP The Encounter. The project was recorded live during what Khaya Mthethwa describes as a deeply spiritual night in worship, a gathering filled with what he calls an unforgettable sense of God’s presence. Unlike a traditional studio project, this release captures the atmosphere of real-time worship, where every voice, pause, and musical rise carries the raw energy of the moment.

Best known for his breakthrough win as the first Black male champion of Idols SA in 2012, Mthethwa has since built a career that moves fluidly between gospel, soul, R&B, and Afro-inspired sounds. Over the years, he has also become a pastor at Oasis Church, a media personality, and a family man, shaping a public identity that blends ministry with music.

With The Encounter, he continues that trajectory, offering a project that leans fully into live worship expression. Early hints suggest that one of the songs is already well-known among his audience through live performances, while the remaining two feature collaborations with fellow worship leaders described as “incredible ministers,” hinting at layered vocals and a strong sense of unity throughout the record.

Born in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, Mthethwa’s musical journey began in church settings as a drummer and choir member before expanding into larger platforms, including his time with Joyous Celebration and later his solo career. Projects such as The Uprising and All About Jesus helped establish him as one of South Africa’s most recognisable gospel voices, consistently bridging the space between stage performance and spiritual encounter.

This new EP appears to follow that same path, leaning into the unique power of live-recorded worship, where imperfections often become part of the message and atmosphere becomes just as important as melody. The cover reveal alone has already sparked excitement, with fans expressing expectation for songs that will carry both personal and congregational weight.

While the full tracklist and featured names have not yet been revealed, anticipation continues to build. Mthethwa has teased that one of the songs is already a favourite during live ministry moments, a detail that has only deepened curiosity about what is to come.

Listeners can expect a project shaped by atmosphere and intention, with expressive vocals, spontaneous worship energy, and collaborations that add depth to the sound. The EP is designed not only as music to play, but as a space meant to be experienced.

As June 12 approaches, The Encounter is shaping up to be more than a release on a calendar. It is being positioned as a shared moment of worship captured on record, inviting listeners into something intimate, expressive, and reflective of a live spiritual encounter.
