Jenn Johnson Reveals How Deep Loss Shaped Her Song “Nearness (Comforter).” Jenn Johnson has opened up about the deeply personal origins of her song “Nearness,” also known as “Comforter,” sharing how it was born out of heartbreak and carried through years of grief and hope.

She recalled the moment the song began, saying, “I remember just getting the call, and I was just so like brokenhearted.” The news was about her friend Darlene Jeff, who had been diagnosed with cancer, a moment she described as emotionally overwhelming but also spiritually clarifying.
In that painful instant, she said something shifted within her. “But I just felt this like quickening of my spirit that no matter what the diagnosis was… this is who God was, and that He was with us and that He was the healer.” That conviction became the foundation of the song, not written for public release but as a gift to someone walking through suffering.
Johnson explained that the song was never initially about her own journey. “This song was not for me, but I really wrote it for my friends,” she shared, adding, “And it’s been a gift in that aspect.” Over time, what began as a private expression of comfort found its way into many other difficult stories and seasons of loss.
She reflected on how the song continued to surface in moments of grief, including walking with the Kilala family after the death of their baby. Each time, the message remained consistent, pointing back to a steady belief that comfort does not disappear in hardship.
Even as she reflected on unanswered prayers and ongoing pain, Johnson emphasised a lasting truth in the song’s message. “Even if we don’t see healing this side of heaven when we pray for people, you know, that God is still the healer,” she said. She added, “And that even if this, you are still this,” underscoring a faith that holds steady regardless of outcomes.
She also described the song’s central assurance simply as “that anchoring of Comforter, you’re with me, and I know.”
Now, years later, “Nearness” continues to resonate with those facing uncertainty and sorrow. For Jenn Johnson, its enduring impact comes from its origin in real pain and its ongoing reminder that comfort can still be found even when answers do not come the way people expect.
