Charles Charamba Reveals the Heartbreaking Tragedy That Inspired His Gospel Classic “Sodom neGomorrah.” Zimbabwean gospel icon and pastor Charles Charamba has revealed the deeply emotional story behind one of his most beloved songs, Sodom neGomorrah, sharing that it was inspired by the devastating Nyanga Bus Disaster, the deadliest road accident in Zimbabwe’s history.
Marking the anniversary of the tragedy, Charamba took to Facebook to reflect on how the events of 3 August 1991 shaped a song that would later become a timeless gospel anthem.
The disaster claimed the lives of 89 people, most of them learners between the ages of 13 and 15 from the Roman Catholic Regina Coeli Mission School. The students and their teachers were returning from a sports event at St Killian’s Mission near Rusape when the overloaded B&C bus lost control on the winding Nyanga to Ruwangwe road. The vehicle veered off the road near Nyakamba, overturned and plunged into a ravine, killing almost everyone on board.
Remembering the painful period, Charamba revealed that he wrote the song about two weeks after the tragedy as a way of comforting the grieving families.
At the time, he did not have a band. While walking through Unit K in Seke on his way to Chitungwiza Town Centre, he heard the Farai Brothers rehearsing and asked if they could accompany him. The musicians agreed, leading to an impromptu recording session that lasted only about 15 minutes.
Reflecting on the moment, Charamba wrote:
“To cut the story, the song became to be entitled ‘Sodom neGomorrah’ 8 years later.”
Years later, the song was officially recorded with his group Fishers of Men and released around the turn of the millennium. Drawing inspiration from the biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah, the track explores themes of human brokenness, tragedy and the hope of God’s comfort during seasons of immense pain.
Since its release, Sodom neGomorrah has become one of Charamba’s signature songs, touching generations of listeners in Zimbabwe and beyond through church services, concerts and personal moments of worship.
Ending his anniversary message with words of faith, Charamba prayed for those still carrying the pain of the disaster.
“May the families continue to be comforted by the Lord.”
More than three decades later, the Nyanga Bus Disaster remains a painful chapter in Zimbabwe’s history. Survivors and families continue to remember the lives lost, while annual commemorations serve as a reminder of the importance of road safety.
For many listeners who cherished Sodom neGomorrah without knowing the story behind it, Charamba’s reflection has now revealed its true origin. What became a celebrated gospel classic was first born from a nation’s grief and a pastor’s desire to bring hope to families mourning the loss of nearly 90 lives.
