“I’m excited to be a part of the huge lineup of gospel artists in Tyler Perry’s The Gospel of Christmas,” Winans wrote. “Christmas is all about the Gospel! Releases only on Netflix, November 11.”

Written, directed, and produced by Perry, the film follows Isaac Jefferson (Durrell “Tank” Babbs), a struggling pastor who inherits his family’s church in a troubled New York neighbourhood. Alongside his wife Rebecca (Fantasia Barrino), Isaac must confront doubt, temptation, and a sinister adversary while rediscovering the power of prayer to save his church, family, and community in time for Christmas.

Winans appears as Mrs Johnson in a cast that reads like a gospel hall of fame. Alongside her are Yolanda Adams (as Gloria), Shirley Caesar (as May), Fred Hammond and Ann Nesby (as Abraham and Sarah), Smokie Norful, Hezekiah Walker, Jekalyn Carr, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, The Clark Sisters (Jacky Clark Chisholm, Twinkie Clark, Dorinda Clark, and Karen Clark Sheard), Le’Andria Johnson, Chanté Moore, and others. Music is produced by Kirk Franklin, ensuring the soundtrack pulses with contemporary and classic gospel, holiday spirit, and the deep-rooted traditions of the Black church.

Perry has long blended faith, family, and drama in his work. This time, he is taking audiences straight to the sanctuary. “I have taken y’all to a family reunion, on a college road trip, to prison, now come on go with me to church,” he teased when announcing the project. The filmmaker has emphasised that assembling these legendary artists was essential to telling the story authentically.

Cece Winans has built a career around songs of faith, hope, and the gospel message, making the project particularly timely. Her declaration, “Christmas is all about the Gospel!” captures the heart of both the festive season and the film. At a time when many are searching for stories of resilience and spiritual renewal, The Gospel of Christmas offers a reminder that even in the darkest neighbourhoods and most difficult seasons, faith, prayer, and community can continue to bring light and hope.

The Gospel of Christmas arrives on Netflix November 11.
