Nathaniel Bassey has opened up about the man he says transformed his life and ministry, revealing that the greatest gift his late mentor, Pastor Eskor Mfon, ever gave him was not musical ability, but the values that continue to shape his calling today.
Reflecting on his journey, the Nigerian gospel singer and worship leader honoured Pastor Mfon, recalling the demanding choir rehearsals that once felt overwhelming but later became the bedrock of his ministry.
According to Nathaniel Bassey, Pastor Mfon was not a professional musician in the conventional sense. Instead, he was a devoted worshipper with an unwavering commitment to excellence. After the choir had already spent hours rehearsing, he would quietly enter the room, sit down with his eyes closed, and listen carefully before offering his verdict.
Many times, after a thoughtful pause, he would smile gently and say the worship was still not worthy of God. Rather than ending the session, he would send the choir back for another two or three hours of rehearsal.
Bassey recalled one lesson that has remained with him throughout his ministry. Pastor Mfon would remind the team, “You know we can’t take people to a place we have not been to ourselves.” He would then open the Scriptures, teach the heart behind ministry, and remain with the choir as they continued refining both their worship and themselves.
Looking back, Bassey admitted there were moments when he struggled to understand why the process had to be so intense.
“There were days I thought ‘this stress is just too much’ just to lead worship,” he wrote. “But what did I know? Poor boy!”
With time, however, he realised those long hours were producing far more than polished performances. They cultivated discipline, spiritual maturity and character.
While acknowledging that Pastor Mfon also cared for those under his leadership in practical ways, Bassey said the true inheritance he received was a life built on values, principles, diligence, renewed thinking, spiritual intelligence, prayer, the Word of God, purity, integrity, character and excellence.
“Today I honour him everywhere I go,” Bassey said. “Because in hindsight, He was God-sent to a young man who only had talent, but with very little or no sense of direction.”
Encouraging others currently being shaped by strong mentors, Bassey urged them not to resent seasons of stretching but to embrace every lesson.
He encouraged young leaders to learn everything they can, never despise the process, and appreciate those who invest their time and energy into helping others succeed. According to Bassey, it is a rare blessing to have someone willing to set aside their own priorities simply to help another person fulfil their potential.
He also offered hope to those who feel their preparation is taking longer than expected, suggesting that prolonged seasons of development may simply be preparation for greater assignments ahead.
At the same time, Bassey cautioned believers to choose their mentors wisely. He encouraged people to submit to leaders who genuinely desire to see them become better and fulfil God’s purpose for their lives, rather than those who seek to dominate or limit them.
His reflections have resonated with worship leaders, musicians and believers alike, serving as a powerful reminder that lasting ministry is built on far more than talent.
