Divine Souls SA Responds To Criticism Over Lutheran Hymn 290 Rendition. South African gospel group Divine Souls SA has issued an official statement responding to public concerns regarding their forthcoming musical rendition of Lutheran Hymn 290.
The group addressed feedback from listeners who expressed concern that the new musical interpretation was disrespectful to the Lutheran Church, its traditions, and its heritage. Replying with humility, Divine Souls SA clarified that their sole intention was to spread the Gospel and reach individuals in need of comfort.
“It has never been our intention to disrespect the Lutheran Church, its congregation, its traditions or this beautiful hymn,” the statement reads. “We have not changed the words of the hymn. What we have brought to it is the Divine Souls SA sound, our musical expression, while seeking to preserve the message that touched us in the first place”.
The group’s producer shared that the idea to record the hymn came after hearing it at a funeral and recognizing its potential as an encouraging daily prayer for people going through difficult life seasons, including those facing grief, illness, job loss, or imprisonment.
Addressing those offended by the release, the group offered a formal apology: “We sincerely apologise to anyone who has personally felt hurt or disrespected by our rendition. We ask only that our intentions and our heart behind the recording also be considered”.
Divine Souls SA reaffirmed their utmost respect for the Church, emphasizing that their prayer is simply for the hymn’s message to travel beyond traditional walls and reach souls in need of hope.
